DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS STUDIES – DIPLOMA COURSES
Entry Requirements for:
Diploma in accounts (ZICA)
Grade 12 School Certificate or its equivalent with five (5) O level subjects, including English and Mathematics, of which two (2) of these subjects should be at Credit or better; or Grade 12 School Certificate or its equivalent with six (6) O level subjects, including English and Mathematics, of which one (1) of these subjects should be at Credit or better.
Diploma in Business Administration
Direct Entry: Grade twelve School certificate with at least credits or better in five subjects, which must include English, Mathematics and any social science subject.
Mature Age: Grade Twelve Certificates passed in 6 subjects with at least two credits or better in English language and Mathematics or passed in 5 subjects with at least two credits or better in English language and Mathematics plus two years work experience in relevant field with a recommendation letter from employer or certificate in a business programme.
Exemptions: Exemptions shall be awarded to candidates with prior qualifications as per TEVETA guidelines on exemptions and bridging courses.
Diploma in Computer Studies 3 Years (TEVETA)
Only candidates who have successfully completed the second year of the Diploma in Computer Studies or are holders of an Advanced Certificate in Computer Studies can proceed to this level of training.
Technically, the first year is the Certificate in Computer Studies and Second year is Advanced Certificate in Computer Studies. This means that a student will do 1 year of studies.
Diploma in Human Resources Management 3 Years (TEVETA)
Five ‘O’ Level credits including Mathematics and English language.
Diploma in Accounting and Entrepreneurship 3 Years (Mulungushi University)
Direct Entry: Grade 12 School Certificate or equivalent with credits in English Language, Mathematics and in three other subjects. Mature Age: Grade Twelve Certificates passed in 6 subjects with at least one credit or better in either English language or Mathematics or passed in 5 subjects with at least two credits or better in English language and Mathematics plus two years work experience in relevant field with a recommendation letter from employer or certificate in a business programme. A Certificate in Accounting or Entrepreneurship Studies will be an added advantage
DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS STUDIES – CERTIFICATE COURSES
Entry Requirements for:
Trade Certificate in Computer Studies 1 Year (TEVETA)
A grade twelve certificate with passes in English and Mathematics plus three other subjects. Applications from people without the above qualifications but who have been working in for at least two years in IT department as assistant will be considered.
Certificate in Computer Studies 1 Year (TEVETA)
Direct entry: Grade 12 School Certificate with credits in 5 subjects including English Language and Mathematics. A pass in ‘O’ Level Computer Studies will be considered as an added advantage.
Mature Age Entry
Grade 12 School Certificate with 5 passes 2 years work experience in a computer related field and recommendation from the employers. Grade 12 level of education plus a Certificate in Information Technology/ Trade Certificate in Computer Studies.
Advanced Certificate in Computer Studies 2 Year (TEVETA)
Direct Entry: Grade 12 School Certificate or equivalent with credits in English Language, Mathematics and in three other subjects. A pass in ‘O’ Level Computer Studies will be considered as an added advantage.
A Certificate in Computer Studies or successful completion of the first year of the Diploma in Computer Studies. This means that a student will only do 1 year of studies.
Certificate in Human Resource Management (TEVETA)
A grade twelve certificate with passes in English and Mathematics plus three other subjects. Applications from people without the above qualifications but who have been working in management or supervisory positions for at least two years will be considered.

This course will enable you learn and apply the technics of material handling. You will be able to:

(s) Introduction to Microsoft Windows (1 week)
(t) Introduction to Micros Soft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access & Publisher)* (1 Month)
It is a world of Computers, you don’t have an option but to have basic computer knowledge, otherwise you can’t function in this modern society we live in. For this reason, the fees for basics in computers are heavily subsidized.
(u) Advanced Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Access)* (3 weeks per package. 3 Months for the whole programme.)
Are you a supervisor, manager or a specialised employee? Are you in Human Resources, Accounts, sales, stores, marketing or production departments? You need to specialise in one or two of the packages. You can’t be a stores clerk or accountant with little knowledge in excel, you will fail to perform. If you are an entrepreneur, you need at least three packages to manage your SME.
(v) Office Administration and Reception Services (3 Months)
This is a course that would give you quick employment. The success of an organisation, be it a company, NGO or Government department depends on the quality of the receptionist. This course offers knowledge that will make you tick in any organisation. After studying, you will be able to:
- (i) Welcome visitors in a warm and friendly manner, and answer any questions visitors have and keep detailed and accurate records of visitor requests and of calls received
- (ii) Maintain reception area and all common areas in a clean and tidy manner at all times
- (iii) Answer and direct phone calls in a polite and friendly manner
- (iv) Operate standard office equipment on a regular basis, including a fax machine, a copy machine, scanner, printer and a computer
- (v) Receive deliveries; sort and distribute incoming mail and Take inventory of supplies and restock as needed
- (vi) Maintain the general office filing system
Entry Requirements for all Skills Certificates:
Direct entry
A grade twelve certificate with passes in English and Mathematics plus three other subjects that must include at least one social science subject (RE, History, Commerce, etc.)
Mature age entry
A grade twelve certificate with passes in English and Mathematics plus one other subject in any social science subject (RE, History, Commerce, etc.)
*Proof of ownership of a business venture (PACRA or Council Business Registration) and must have passed grade 9 or are able to read and write well in English.
(w) Public Sector Financial Management
The Skills certificate will provide the necessary skills to enable teachers and indeed any person who pursues it to be able to perform accounting work in Government institutions. The end result will be reduction in audit queries.
The teachers and government workers once trained in Skills Certificate in Public Sector Financial Management will be able to ensure that:
- (i) Revenue is collected from all non-vulnerable learners to avoid the audit query of failure to collect revenue
- (ii) Revenue collection is properly recorded in receipt book, general revenue cash book and promptly banked in accordance with the governing laws and regulations.
- (iii) All expenditure is appropriately planned and controlled to avoid wasteful expenditure.
- (iv) They adhere to relevant laws, regulations, circulars and minutes from cabinet office, controlling officers and treasury.
- (v) They maintain an effective, efficient, economical and transparent system of financial management
- (vi) Adhere to risk management policies and internal controls
- (vii) Public resources and assets are safeguarded
- (viii) Avoid irregular or wasteful expenditure, misapplication of funds, theft or loss resulting from negligence or criminal conduct of either themselves or other officers
- (ix) Participate in both internal and external audit by giving relevant information as and when it is demanded by the auditors
Job opportunities
Officers who pursue this course will be attached to accounts department. In Ministry of Education, not all schools have accounting officers. Hence, teachers once trained, can assist in running the school accounting system.
(x) Public Procurement
As at now, in the Ministry of Education (MOE) qualified procurement officers are only at MOE HQs and Provincial Education Offices. The DEBS office, colleges of education and Secondary and Primary Schools have no qualified procurement officers but have appointed on administrative convenience general workers, office orderlies and at times teachers to work as procurement officers. This has resulted in main audit queries.
The reality is that as long as schools are financed, (and no school in Zambia has a Zambia Institute of Purchasing and supply (ZIPS) recognised procurement officer), teachers will procure goods and services on behalf of government. Hence forth, this skills certificate will bring forth decency in the procurement section. The end result is prudent financial management because audit queries will reduce.
Entry qualifications
Direct entry, 6 months programme: G12 certificate with 5 passes with a credit or better in Mathematics and English.
Mature age entry 3 months programme: This is for people who are already working in government or public institutions especially those working under Ministry of Education and Health or any other government department. They have to be exempted from subjects that they deserve.
- • Must have a recognised professional Certificate, Diploma or Degree in teaching or management related field and must have passed Grade 12 with a credit or better in Mathematics and English.
- • G12 certificate with 5 passes with a credit or better in Mathematics or English and must be already in employment in government as a general worker, driver, secretary, Office orderly, etc.

(y) Certificate in Psychosocial Counselling ZCC/TEVETA (3 Months)
This Skills Certificate Course in counselling will contribute to the improvement in the levels of service, quality and improve on health life style. Although there are many NGOs operating in the country at the moment, most of the staff have not undergone any recognised training to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to enable them competently carry out planning, resource mobilization and communication to the required standard.
This programme has been developed to enhance capacities of programme implementers in civil society organisations in order for them to acquire practical skills, knowledge and positive attitudes so as to cope with the challenges of the ever increasing cases of the diseases, OVC, poverty, injustice, etc.
