Student General Information
Educational Tours and Access to Practical Clinical Locations
Shimabala Institute educational tours are meant to offer training experience to students on specific areas of study and are part of learning. Therefore, these educational tours are mandatory to all learners and must be adhered to.
Admittance to Clinical areas
The Institute governs practical learning through the skills lab and science lab and additionally, the Institute has affiliated itself to different University Teaching Hospitals, Central, General and District Hospitals. Only students doing practical’s can access the clinical areas through a yearly timetable that determines the period when specific students can be allowed to access a particular clinical site. Therefore, students shall not access any of the clinical sites without permission from their respective instructors or lecturers.
Guidance and Counselling
Counselling aims to guide students in identifying short and long term goals and in making sensible, practical and achievable choices.
At SHINS Counsellor’s will be able to provide guidance and counselling to the students for various problems concerning their studies.
Some of the areas of concern are:
- Psychotherapy Students come to colleges with different personal and psychological problems. This could be: coming from a broken family, bad boyfriend/girlfriend relationships, socialisation challenges, career concerns, emotional health issues, etc. These problems if not well handled can stress the learner and affect the overall education performance.
- Academics and Learning The purpose of being in school is to learn, study and pass the exam. In short to gain practical knowledge. Counselling improves academic performance of a student.
- Career Counselling Counselling helps individual students in selecting an area of study. Many students plan to pursue a field of study they have no idea about. They may choose it because of peers.
- Educational and Psychological Outreach Counsellors are motivators and facilitators of change in the life of a student. Their role is not simple as they have to touch in a positive way the life of every student. They need to address many issues like: Financial management of students, stress, study habits, time management, drug abuse, unpleasant behaviour like rioting and other cross-cutting issues
Institute accommodation, shops and eating places
The Shimabala Institute has boarding houses. This accommodation is allocated on first come, first serve. Henceforth, students are supposed to pay in full if they wish to access Institute boarding houses which apparently are located near the institute. All rooms are shared with two students occupying a room.
Currently, the Institute does not have accommodation for married students or mothers with small babies. Also, the rented boarding houses are limited and can’t accommodate all the students. But the Institute is embarking on the project to construct its own hostels so that 60% of the students can live on campus. This will enable them to use library facilities after learning hours.
The Institute will operate a restaurant where students can buy meals at lunch time and a tuckshop where they can buy groceries. On the other hand, there are enough shops nearby where almost anything can be purchased.
Sporting activities
SHINS promote all forms of sports that form part of physical education and mental training. As a result, the institute will support students who will show keen interest in sporting activities. To promote competition in sports, SHINS will be affiliated to legally recognised and non-academic disturbing sporting bodies. However, where there is conflict between an academic programme and a sporting programme, the academic programme shall take precedence. No student shall miss learning or an exam on account of sports.
SHINS Access to Medical care
When a Students falls sick whilst on Campus or Institute boarding house or hostels or whilst at a Practical Site they shall be attended to by the Institute medical personnel or any medical personnel available and the cost shall be borne by the Institute. Therefore, a student who is not feeling well has a responsibility of reporting to the Institute Medical Facility or inform the counsellor in charge.
If the sickness can’t be treated at the Institute Medical facility, a student shall be taken to a government recognised hospital. After which, the guardian or parent of the student shall take over the responsibility of taking care of their child. Student’s Medical fees paid to the Institute by respective learners are not an insurance for health services as such they do not cover hospital bills. However, Student’s Medical fees covers transportation to the hospital and palliative care before being taken to the hospital.

1. All students, as long as they are within campus or they are at clinical area, whether during learning hours or not, be it on holiday or Saturday or Sunday will be required to carry an identity card and must display the same at all times.
